5th Grade Curriculum
For this project, we as a group we were assigned to assist a 5th grade teacher in her chemistry curriculum for her students. We constructed a calendar that was a composed of different activities and labs for the students to complete and gain a better understanding of basic chemistry concepts. By incorporating different styles of teaching like worksheets, videos, games, and labs, will allow students of all varying types of learning abilities to grasp the information. We then presented our final product to a series of judges you evaluated our work and gave us feedback. Finally, we sent our work to the 5th grade teacher for her to use for her class.
Reflection:
For this assignment there wasn't much structure our limitations for what we could and could not do, so overall I would consider this project as a success. However some setbacks included, not having a clear concept on how we wanted to start in developing this curriculum, and a few lapses of not being focused. The things that went well for our group was our equal distribution of work, as well as incorporating several clever ideas throughout the process.
Because this project was so open-ended, it required a lot of creativity to make both an enjoyable and educational learning experience for the 5th graders. For me, I believed I have become more of a creative thinker in coming up with new, possible activities for our curriculum. I also learned more about the education system itself, in observing what standards 5th graders were required to meet. Such as, they need to have a general understanding of the parts of an atom and know some of the key elements of the periodic table.
There are still areas for improvement in what I could do better for the upcoming projects. For one, staying focused throughout the majority of any project is a must, and will allow for much more success. Secondly, I feel like I need to step outside the box a little more and take risks by offering more creative ideas. In the end, my group and I handled the task we were given in a well thought out and professional manner.
Recap:
2 pits - a few lapses of being unfocused and having a slow start to this project
2 peaks - equal distribution of work and influencing creative ideas that set our group apart from the rest
