Lab: Photosynthesis Plant Lab
Purpose: Effect of intensity and wavelength of light on photosynthesis (measured by amount of starch production).
Hypothesis: If we cover the leaves with black paper, photosynthesis will not occur because black blocks the light, reflecting all other colors. While if the red cellophane is covering the leaves, there would be little change in brightness because it is reflecting the red light.

Materials:
- Black Paper - Dropper - Green Plant
- 5 Petri Dishes - Scissors - Red Plant
- Red Cellophane - Iodine - Black Wax Pencil
- Blue Masking Tape - Tweezers - Hot Ethanol
- 5 Test Tubes - Spatula - Water

Procedure: First, take both the red and green plant and cut small sections of red cellophane. You then take the cellophane pieces and tape them on the top leaves of both plants. You repeat the same procedure but with black pieces of paper. You want to select different sizes of leaves to cover to compare different results, but you still want to leave some foliage uncovered. After a day or two, we uncover the leaves and and cut them into specific sections off their stem. With the cut off leaves, we then removed chlorophyll by heating the leaves in hot Ethanol. After, we rinse them, and test for starch using iodine. However, for the red plant, we separated the red from green leaks and then tested

This was not my favorite lab, but it was interesting in some ways. I found observing the leaves after being soaked in the hot Ethanol to be fascinating. Seeing the difference of bright and muddy colors was really interesting to visualize. Also observing how the photosynthesis of plant can rapidly increase or decrease by covering leaves with different colors was surprising to discover.
Because this lab was so short, it kind of felt unfinished and needed something more to go along with it. Maybe testing different and more familiar plants would create the lab to be more exciting and engaging. Also having to share the plants with another pair was frustrating because the other group took charge and my partner and I were not as involved in the project has we would have liked to be.
Working with Emilie was productive as usual and we got the done job done:
Leadership: 20 Emilie always knew what procedures to do next and used her leadership skills to contribute everyone.
Cooperation: 20 She always contributed all of what she could and continued to give a helping hand whenever needed
Attitude/Demeanor: 19 Emilie maintained to have a positive attitude throughout the entire process even though we couldn't contribute as much.
Facilitation/Mediation: 19 She was a great mediator between our group and other groups by keeping strong communication.
Empathy: 19 Emilie always allow people take part in the lab and shares a supportive attitude to everyone.
